WYAC Visit to Witley Court 12th July 2009

by Lian Sean Wild.

Witley Court is a spectacular, privately owned ruined grand country house set in over 40 acres of ground - which is now under the stewardship of English Heritage. We were visiting the house to learn all about its history, how the house got into the state it is in, how it is currently being managed – and also what the plans are for the future.

Activity one saw us trying wattle and daubing in the shell of Plas Cadwgn, a medieval building that would have been made up of these panels. First we created the framework, before putting on some clay.

In the second activity we had a go at brick making. At first we tried making them with our hands, before being along wooden slats to enable us to give them straight sides. When we laid them all out it could be seen that without moulds we had created a wide variety of shapes!

The Lost World of Tudor Newport Street

Today Newport Street in Worcester has mostly modern buildings on it and only residents normally go down it. However in Tudor times it was a bustling street that ran down to the old bridge and home to many merchants. At this meeting we looked at documents and archaeology that helped to tell us about this lost world.

The day consisted of two parts. One part was a tour around the park, finding out how it had developed over the years.

The park was named after a World War I battle that the Worcestershire Regiment took part in.

The other part of our visit allowed us to be museum curators and have a go at documenting and choosing items for display that were found in the park. These will be on display in the Sons of Rest building for the next few months.

In January 30 members of WYAC came to Worcestershire History Centre, part of Worcestershire Record Office, to find out what resources can be found at the Record Office to help tell archaeologists about landscape history.

We started off looking at general sources archaeologists can use, before Charlene, one of the archivists, told the members about the records of Croome Court and what they tell us about the landscape.
