I just wanted to say thank you to everyone involved in the Broadway Project and the Exhibition yesterday - I thought it went off brilliantly - the youngsters were the stars, of course, and didn't they do well. Whether is was giving the Presentation, chatting to people, flogging raffle tickets and bits of Roman pot and helping with the finds washing, they really put everything into it and it was a delight to see them so full of enthusiasm.
I was so very relieved and pleased that Mick Aston managed to come along. He was just great and it made all the difference. When it came to handing out the certificates, Malcolm (Archaeology Officer) lovely that he is, would not have had the quite the awestruck effect on the youngsters that Mick had. It was funny to watch them grab their certificates and make off - suddenly so shy and bashful.
I particularly wanted to say thanks to parents, helpers and members of SWAG and Alan's volunteer team - without all your hard work the day would not have been the huge success it was. It was great for me to know that I could rely on everyone to do what they said they would do and everything went so smoothly, both behind the scenes and out in front. From putting up the T-shirt banner which looked great, laying out all the other stuff, to then all the clearing up afterwards, which I so dreaded, was done in a flash without any fuss at all. Brilliant! Thank you.
Alan, Will, Richard and Don - thanks for your fantastic work with the finds washing. A really successful activity which draws in the people and occupies and interests everyone. I really had no idea how much stuff we had collected up - loads and loads. Alan and Will are now both on the WYAC committee, which is great news for us.
I also want to single out those parents and WYAC leaders on the committee who have spend so much time and effort making sure it would all happen on the day.
Gary spent a huge amount of time sorting the publicity and managed to get a big article in the Evesham Journal and the Worcester Evening News both with pictures and the Evening News - colour pictures. He also managed to pull off the T-Shirt printing in time for the day - the orange shirts really added to the occasion and gave the youngsters are real sense of belonging to the Club. So big thank you Gary - and we have almost raised enough cash to pay for half of them!!
Gloria , as well as going through the power point presentation with the youngsters, took on the thankless task of the 'Teas' and not only sorted out the buying all the stuff but made it all happen without a hitch on the day. Thanks also to all who helped her on the day - that was one heck of lot of washing up!!
Peter and Steve who quietly get on with anything I ask them to do (yes I know I can be a bit bossy), picking up all those jobs that need doing to make things run smoothly and keeping me calm by stopping me switching to panic mode.
Thanks to Vanda too, who always underplays her contribution. She stayed very very late on Friday helping me stick bits of velcro on the exhibition photos etc and lugging all the stuff out to my car. Much appreciated. When it came to selling raffle tickets Vanda was the biz (must use this previously untapped talent at other events!), with her team of little helpers they raised over £60!! We ended up with lots of prizes demonstrating the generosity of our members' families.
Also want to say thanks to Mike and Emma, as unlike me who gets time allowed at work to do WYAC stuff (only I don't think the boss realises quite how much time I spend on it), Mike and Emma have to do any WYAC work in their own time. Mike's flare for design has not gone unnoticed - his posters were great and all the website stuff is really excellent - the photos are on there already! Emma who organised the prizes and calmly ran the Colouring-in activity, which proved very popular and ideal to keep very small children occupied so their parents could look at the exhibition - much use this activity again. For those who may not be aware, Emma has now taken over as WYAC Treasurer (much to Mike's relief but thanks for looking after it for the last two years Mike). Emma has already in her usual efficient way sorted and counted our takings from Sunday and we have collected over £165 which I think is fantastic. It seems that our WYAC members are not shy about asking people for donations to their Club. This will go some way towards paying for the T-Shirts - Sheena is still hoping to entice Tesco's out of another £100 to pay for the rest!
Which brings me to Sheena and her and her friend's fantastic cake which was done at a special low price for us. Wow! For those who didn't see it, it was a huge confection with chocolate icing ploughed field, ranging poles, archaeologists, JCB digger, small finds, skeletons in a trench and the final touch - a gold crown on one of their heads! And it was delicious too! - so I have no hesitation in recommending Sheena's friend's new business ' Nutmeg Cakes'. Sheena, of course, spends hours behind the scenes running the club membership and communication and most importantly helping me out - without her hard work and support it would be difficult for us to run such a successful Club.
Anyway I know I go on a bit so I will stop now.
I hope I have remembered to thank everyone (apologies if I have missed anyone out). Sunday was an opportunity for us to show case what it is we do with WYAC
(as well as the farmer and his wife and families and friends of WYAC members, we also managed to get three County Councillors there and Head of Cultural Services - which means that we haven't gone unnoticed!) and I think we gave them a great show! Well done to everyone - now next year.........................
All the best
Deborah
